Internship in Peru

"When I decided to have an internship at the clinic in Peru, I did it to learn about the medical field. What I got out of the experience were life-long friends, colleagues and role models. I realized that I'd found a profession I was truly passionate about and i didn't want to leave that environment. I learned a lot not only from the doctors, but from the patients that came every day to seek our help. I learned a lot about myself as an individual and I'm lucky to have met such great people. The most amazing thing I experienced was assisting in three live births and the funny thing is that they were all girls! It was definitely an eye-opening experience and something almost unreal. I had a great time getting to know those people and they really made an impact on my life". Diana - August 2008

Most tourist visas are valid for up to 3 months. If you are interested in a longer program, we will assist you in applying for a visa extension. We recommend checking with your local Ecuadorian consulate for the most up to date visa information.

Language Classes:
Optional language classes are available in either Lima or Cusco. Language classes are a great way to be introduced to a new country and improve your Spanish skills. Classes are held prior to starting your internship and can be in small groups or one-on-one sessions with a personal tutor. Classes are 20 hours per week (4 hours/day) for an additional USD$400/week and include homestay accommodations and meals. These classes are highly recommended, especially if you are not intermediate or have not practiced your Spanish recently.

The internship is located in a small clinic in the Sacred Valley, near Cusco.  The clinic has two operating rooms, four consultation rooms, dental and gynecological care, a lab, pharmacy, and a birthing center.  Interns will work alongside the doctors, dentists and nurses as they care for the patients.  Since it is a small clinic, interns will be exposed to many different sides of medicine and dentistry.

Clinical Medicine

Location: Lima

Description of project and duties:
The main responsibility of the health center is to provide medical assistance to all community members, regardless of socioeconomic conditions.  The clinic has a laboratory, pharmacy, gynecologist, newborn nursery, dental care, and an emergency room for minor surgeries and childbirth.  Interns will assist the doctors and nurses as well as provide primary health care information directly to patients and families.

The physical therapy center is dedicated to the rehabilitation of children who have cerebral palsy, autism, Down Syndrome, and other physical and mental disabilities. The center also has an area dedicated to the rehabilitation of adults.

Community Development

Indigenous Development

Location: Cusco

Description of project and duties:
This organization's mission is to assist the cultural and economic development of the indigenous Andean population in and around Cusco.  They concentrate on sustainable development, education, and cultural preservation.  This is a non-profit, non-governmental entity created by a group of specialists with backgrounds in sustainable development, anthropology, economics, sociology, and human rights. The main focuses/goals are education, cultural history, psychology and women’s rights and development, and indigenous groups. Interns will work as fundraising coordinators, assist with administrative tasks associated with managing a non-profit, and work directly with some of the local project initiatives.

Psychology and Women’s Rights

Interns will take part in unique projects at a women’s refuge in Cusco.  The refuge offers women in the local community access to group activities, a community kitchen, legal and psychological assistance, space to sell their handmade crafts, and information on domestic violence and spousal rights. Depending on their skills and preferences, interns may assist with workshops and fundraising efforts, as well as to help create and coordinate new projects for women at the refuge.

Education

Teacher’s Assistant

Locations: Lima and Cusco

Description of project and duties:
Many public schools in Peru are over-crowded and under-staffed.  Schools are looking for interns to help with classroom activities at the elementary and high school levels.  Interns will be assisting teachers with regular lessons (math, art, music, Spanish) but are encouraged to bring a special interest or skill to the classroom.  We also work with an alternative school that encourages learning through music.  Anyone with musical talent or even just an interest in music would be a welcome addition to the staff at this school.

Sports and Recreation Coach

Locations: Lima and Cusco

Description of project and duties:
Due to a lack of resources, many schools in Peru do not offer organized sports programs.  AIDE works with several schools that are interested in having people come to serve as coaches and athletic motivators for their students. Any athletic interest is encouraged, but soccer is the most popular sport in Peru, and there is a great interest in soccer coaches.  Men and women are both encouraged to participate in this program.

Environmental Studies / Ecology and Conservation

Amazon Rainforest Conservation

Interns will be placed at the largest national park in Peru, which, due to its topographical range, has one of highest levels of biodiversity of any park in the world. Interns will assist with the protection and maintenance of the park, and work with local organizations to raise consciousness about Amazon rainforest conservation. Depending on their skills and experience, interns may choose work such as opening paths, trail maintenance, organic plantation and cultivation, monitoring and reintroduction of endemic animals, monitoring and inventory of flora (photograph registration), environmental education for native and local children (teaching basic English, art, music, sports, and others), inventory of plants with medicinal qualities, and reforestation.
