VOLUNTEER PERU: PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATION

We are very excited you have chosen the AIDE as your program provider! AIDE is an educational travel organization devoted to expanding the horizons of people of all ages through experiencing another culture. Based in Austin, Texas, AIDE offers a wide range of programs. AIDE was launched as a not for profit sister organization of Alliance Abroad Group (AAG), in order to expand upon the programs historically offered by the AAG Outbound Department.

As a not for profit AIDE aims to reach a larger audience, and has more than 16 years of experience in offering programs abroad due to its previous home in the AAG Outbound Department. Through its affiliation with some of the world’s oldest and most respected language schools and experiential education programs, AIDE has helped thousands of people travel abroad. The organization provides interesting customized programs to students and young adults wishing to work, teach or volunteer in many countries across the world. AIDE prides itself in being able to offer program flexibility, support, quality placements, an easy application process and affordable prices.

What Happens Next?

If you haven’t already done so, confirm the number of weeks you wish to take language classes and the number of weeks you wish to volunteer.

· Within 2-7 business days you should receive an invoice, sent to you through email, from our finance department. Please keep an eye out for this email! It may be diverted to your junk mail folder. Your payment is due no later than 60 days prior to your arrival date. We will not start the placement process until full payment has been received. However, due to the fact that we are working with another culture, we ask that you remain flexible about receiving your placement details.
** AIDE is a non-profit organization. Donations contributed in excess of the fair market value of services you receive from AIDE may be tax deductible. Please consult your tax adviser.

· Once the program fee is paid in full, your application is submitted to the local coordinator to begin matching you to an appropriate project and host family. Placements are typically confirmed 2-6 weeks prior to your arrival date; due to the fact that we are working with another culture, we ask that you remain flexible about receiving your placement details.

· We will send you Pre-departure orientation materials for your review. It is very important that you carefully review all materials that are sent to you. Ask us if you have any questions!

· Once you have purchased airline tickets, you must email us your complete itinerary. It is very important that you include details such as airline, flight number, connecting airports, time and day of arrival and the day you plan to leave Peru. We use this information to arrange for your airport pick up and insurance. IMPORTANT – your insurance will not be activated until we receive your flight details.

· Once your placement is found, we will send you the details of the placement for your approval. It is important to us that you are matched up with the best placement so you can have the experience you are seeking. Once you have read over the project description, you will need to send back your approval and agreement to the terms of the project. This can be done by sending an email stating your acceptance of the terms of the project. The email serves as an “electronic signature.”

· Once we have received your project approval and complete flight details, you are ready to start your adventure!

Arriving in Peru
You may purchase your tickets at any time. We ask that you arrive on the 2nd or 4th Thursday of the month. If you are unable to arrive on these days, please let your program coordinator know so we can make other arrangements.

Your local coordinator will be at the airport to pick you up. She will be holding a sign with your name on it and will take you back to your lodging.

Visa Documentation
If you are an American, Canadian, Australian, European or a New Zealand citizen you do not need a visa for Peru. Your passport will admit you to the country for 90 days as a tourist. If you are planning to stay for longer than 90 days it is necessary to extend your tourist visa. You may renew your tourist status at a Peruvian immigration office (Oficina de Migraciones) for 30 days. The revalidation will cost $20 USD. The main Oficina de Migraciones in Lima is located on Prolongacion España #734, in Breña (phone 330-4112). If you remain in Peru beyond your period of authorized stay without obtaining a visa extension or a residence visa, you will have to pay a fine to depart the country.

AIDE does not have any authority to grant visas, and cannot be held responsible for any difficulties you have in obtaining a visa.

Insurance
One of the benefits of booking your trip through AIDE is that we provide excellent travel insurance, which covers health, accidents and prescriptions for medical issues which develop during your program. You are also covered for emergency evacuation related to medical necessity. Please note that pre-existing conditions are not covered, and you also will be responsible for a deductible. The Program Manager will give you an insurance card with insurance carrier contact information to have during your trip. Details of the coverage can be found on the AIDE website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a language requirement for this program?
At least an intermediate proficiency in Spanish is strongly recommended for this program. If you do not have knowledge of the language prior to departure, we recommend that you take Spanish classes once in-country. If you do not at least speak some Spanish, it will be very difficult for you to participate in volunteer projects. This is a very independent program, and you may not be placed near other English speakers.

Where will my volunteer project be and what will I be doing?
The majority of projects are going to be located in or around Lima. We do our best to make sure each participant is matched up with the best project for him or her, but your placement is always subject to availability. Your specific duties will vary depending on the project you are matched with. You can check out the list of current at: http://www.aideabroad.org/volunteer/peru.asp.

What will my volunteering schedule be?
Your schedule will vary depending on your particular volunteer project. Once you arrive in Peru you may work out your particular work schedule with the volunteer coordinator of your project. Some projects are flexible about when you will work; others have specific times that they will need you. Please note that while volunteering it will be important for you to ask your supervisor about where you can help. Sometimes it may seem that there is little to do. Often supervisors do not feel comfortable telling volunteers what to do. Please be sure
to stay motivated and keep an open mind!

Who is my host family?
All host families are screened by the local coordinator in Peru. Some families have small children, some are single parent households, others have no children, or children that have already moved out. In most cases, during your volunteer project, the family you stay with will be middle-class Peruvian people. They live much more simply than you may be accustomed to. It is important to keep in mind that this is part of your immersion experience. Living in such different conditions may be difficult, but it is part of the challenge, and ultimately will be part of your growth gained from your experience in Peru. Almost all our participants say that their host family is their favorite part of the program. It is an amazing opportunity for you to immerse yourself in the culture, and engage in life like a Peruvian.

What will my accommodations be like?
If you will be volunteering in the Amazon you will be living at a lodge in a reserve. For all the other volunteer projects you will be placed with a host family. Showers may be cold or luke-warm, and water may be limited or expensive so please be mindful. You may have your own room, but you will likely share a bathroom. There may also be other volunteers from around the world staying with the same family. They are opening their home to you and we ask that you do not treat it like a hotel. You will need to pick up after yourself and keep your room clean. Be mindful of the amount of time you spend in the bathroom and on the phone. Always inform you family if you are going to miss a meal or will be gone for long hours at a time.

How will I do my laundry?
Your host mother will likely do your laundry for you, however, for cultural reasons we ask that you clean your own undergarments.

When will I eat?
During your volunteer project you will receive 3 meals a day with your host family. If you volunteer during lunch, they may make you a meal to take with you such as a sandwich.

What is the food like?

Peru is famous throughout South America for its food. As a major fishing nation, fish is abundant, and prepared with imagination. The primary ingredients found in nearly every Peruvian dish are rice, potatoes, chicken, pork, lamb, and fish. Most of these meals include one of the different kinds of "aji", or Peruvian hot pepper.

What if I’m a vegetarian?
Your host family will try their best to accommodate any special diet requirements you may have. However, please be prepared to supplement your own meals if they are unable to adjust their cuisine to meet your needs.

How much does it cost to go to the Galapagos Islands?
Round trip airfare from Quito to the Galapagos costs $410 USD. This is a price set by the Ecuadorian Government. Once you have purchased your airfare to Ecuador we will use those dates to purchase your ticket to the islands. However, we require payment of the $410 before we purchase your tickets. Keep in mind that Ecuador is considered to be one of the least expensive countries to live/travel in South America; however, life on the Galapagos (as with any island) can be significantly more expensive than the mainland.

Do I need to get any immunizations before I leave?
AIDE does not require any proof of immunizations, however we do recommend that you research which ones are needed for Peru based on your past immunization history. The Center for Disease Control has an excellent website about health and travel at: http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/redirect.aspx. You should always consult with your doctor about what immunizations he or she recommends for Peru. This is important as you do not want any medications or immunizations to conflict with any current or past treatment. You should take care of any immunizations 4-6 weeks prior to your arrival as many immunizations require booster shots, or take some time to be effective.

Do I have to do anything after the program is over?
Yes, as part of AIDE’s Volunteer in Peru Program you are required to complete an evaluation form at the conclusion of your program. You will receive the form by email shortly after you return. It is very important to us to hear about your experiences. It helps us improve our programs, and will ultimately help all the participants that follow you.
